Introducing the New Carmen Showband Scoresheet

Over the past several months I’ve had the pleasure of working with many talented people in the show choir community to design a new scoresheet for evaluating the instrumental portion of a show choir performance.

Evaluating a showband performance is a complicated thing. Unlike visuals and vocals, where uniformity is essential, each instrument in the band has a different role and often uses different techniques to fulfill that role. You have to consider not only how the band executes its music, but also how that performance contributes to and supports the production as a whole. Further complicating the matter is that the size of a typical showband ranges from as small as 2 people to as large as 30; some bands have students, and some have adults; and some even bring their own mixing equipment and sound support.

To fairly compare all these different kinds of bands requires a scoresheet where every category is applicable to every kind of band. That was our main goal in creating this sheet. Our secondary goal was to create a sheet that would be instructional, so that anyone new to show choir would be able to look at the sheet and have a clear idea of what is expected from a showband. I think we’ve accomplished both goals with this new scoresheet, and I’m excited to start using it.
